Satya MacDonald, Housekeeper with Absolute Domestics, has built her career around a genuine passion for creating order and comfort in people’s homes. In this interview, Satya shares what she loves most about housekeeping, the skills that keep her organized and focused, and her aspirations to become an executive housekeeper delivering five-star standards.

1. What inspired you to pursue your current career path?

   I was inspired to do housekeeping because I realized how much I love cleaning and running a home, and how satisfying it is for me to look back at my work and see things restored to their original clean condition.

2. Who or what influenced your professional direction most?

   My mother and mother-in-law influenced me the most to be a housekeeper - and a thorough one - as they both taught me a lot about cleaning, bond cleaning, and running a home.

3. What does a typical day look like in your role?

   I usually start work around 9 a.m. at the client’s home. I begin by cleaning and dusting all surfaces room by room, then move on to sanitizing the bathrooms and mopping and vacuuming the floors. I change linen and do laundry if requested, wipe walls to remove fingerprints, and tidy everything - like arranging cushions - so it’s appealing and the client can see it’s been freshly cleaned. After finishing, I catch the train home, as I work in different suburbs.

4. Which skills have been most valuable to your success?

   The most valuable skills I have for my success are time management, which helps me stay efficient, and organizational skills, which help me tackle all jobs - from small to large - with focus and structure.

5. What’s one change you’d like to see in your industry?

   The change I would like to see in my industry would be higher wages, as I feel the average housekeeping wage is quite low considering the level of physical effort and attention to detail the job requires.

6. What values guide your decision-making at work?

   The values that guide me most in my decision-making are integrity and honesty, as they are both essential for building trust with clients.

7. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

   The accomplishment I’m most proud of is running a homestead and looking after the workers on a wheat and merino sheep farm in remote western New South Wales, between the towns of Walgett and Lightning Ridge.

8. How do you hope to make an impact in the future?

   The next stage I am most excited about in my role is studying further and becoming an executive housekeeper, ensuring cleaning is done to a five-star standard and continuing to improve my skills and earning potential.
