Barry Spencer, Freelance Writer with Technical Authors Ltd, is a Chartered Engineer whose career spans IT, telecommunications, and technical writing across the globe - from the US and Algeria to Abu Dhabi and Finland. Now focused on authoring and blogging, he combines decades of engineering expertise with a passion for technology, AI, and politics. In this interview, Barry reflects on the lessons from his early apprenticeship, the evolution of his career, and how he continues to adapt in a rapidly changing digital world.

1. How would you describe your professional background in a few sentences?

   Qualified as a Chartered Engineer (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) and worked in IT and Telecommunications for many years. I also wrote newsletters for the Financial Times (technical newsletters) and four other publications. My career has taken me across the world - from the US to Algeria, Abu Dhabi, and Finland - giving me a broad perspective on technology and communication across different industries and cultures.

2. What was one defining moment early in your career?

   I completed an apprenticeship with BT, taking notes and working under direction for a couple of years. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was the top apprentice in the area. When I completed my apprenticeship, I applied for a role a few positions above my current status, and they offered me the position. For the next few years, I excelled at my job, which set the foundation for my confidence and ambition in the engineering field.

3. What does a typical day look like in your role?

   Primarily because technology has surpassed me, I now write for a living as a technical author and blogger. I’ve published a book on AI on Amazon KDP and written over 100 papers and blogs, which are all referenced on my website (TechnicalAuthorsUK.Org). Each day, I dedicate time to researching, writing, and refining articles on technology and AI - and I also look for new writing opportunities on sites like Upwork.

4. How do you continue to grow and stay current in your field?

   As I now concentrate more on blogging and article writing, my focus has shifted to politics, AI, and technology. These topics are constantly evolving and widely discussed in the media, offering endless inspiration. I digest information from the press, television, and social media, and sometimes use ChatGPT to clarify points - though I always verify details using Google and other trusted sources. It’s a continual learning process that keeps me sharp and informed.

5. How do you see your profession evolving in the next few years?

   Once AI reaches the stage of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), I believe my entire career as a technical writer could be transformed - or even disappear. Many predict this development will occur within the next few years, so I’m making the most of the opportunities available now. While AI can assist with writing, it still lacks genuine creativity and nuance - areas where human authors continue to excel.

6. How would you describe your leadership style?

   My leadership style is practical, clear, and instructional. The first step is always identifying the issues at hand, followed by explaining how to resolve them. With my years of experience, I can offer direct guidance on specific tasks, as I’ve likely performed similar functions myself. I’ve learned the importance of giving clear, detailed instructions with real examples so there’s no confusion about expectations.

7. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

   Becoming a Chartered Engineer in my twenties was a major achievement and a turning point in my career. Another proud moment was leading a large project at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in France, managing a substantial team and navigating international collaboration. Looking back, I’m also proud of my strong academic foundations - consistently excelling in maths and science during my school years.

8. What are you most excited about in the next stage of your career?

   While the arrival of AGI may change the landscape of writing and technology, I’m genuinely excited to continue producing articles and blogs - especially on political and social topics, which provide a wealth of material for analysis. I also plan to keep exploring freelance opportunities through platforms like Upwork to diversify my work. Even as AI reshapes the world, I remain fascinated by its potential to make life easier and look forward to seeing how it evolves.
